Ten Good SheepTen Good Sheep

Hand-Felted Olive Oil Soap

Love for her friends of the four-legged, woolly variety ... everything starts there for fiber artist Karyn Belknap. A fascination with wool and immersion in wool’s creative pallette are the natural results. Karyn’s adventure and love affair with natural fiber began with the acquisition of her first spinning wheel in 1993. Eventually, she gathered a flock of ten sheep at her Virginia farm and studio, changing her life forever. Karyn’s current focus has narrowed to wool felt, and the majority of her work is with felted soaps, nuno felted neckware and knitted and felted hats. Frequent detours into wet felting, dyeing and other experimentation keep the play and education of art fresh.

Handmade PrettiesHandmade Pretties

Recycled Sweater Balls

Handmade Pretties was created by Lara Newsom in 2002. She started by making felt flowers, sold outside the cafeteria at Cal Arts while attending graduate school as a way to keep herself in coffee. Lara soon was making all sorts of abstract doodads and carting them around to boutiques in Los Angeles. What began as little felt flowers had become small handstitched works of art. Today, Lara makes lines of balls, pincushions, brooches, bags and purses, clothing, coasters, and more. Lara enjoys recycling materials and finding creative new uses for all things discarded or overlooked. In 2007, Lara relocated from Los Angeles to Urbandale, Iowa, with her husband, their two children, two cats, and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of fabric.

Tremundo

Handbound Blank Journals

Traci Nelson calls Tremundo, based in her home studio near Philadelphia, "a collective world of the creative mind." Traci's imagination tends to take her all over the creative map ... sewing, painting, refurbishing and more. But her main focus is making original handbound journals. Traci's "BlueToad" journals feature her own mixed media art on their canvas covers and 60 lb., acid-free paper on the inside. They're the perfect size for jotting down thoughts, special notes and creative expressions, and they make great gifts.
